Ottawa Hospital Capping Layoffs at 17 Amid Financial Restructuring

The Ottawa Hospital is managing financial challenges by implementing workforce reductions. The hospital announced earlier this year it was preparing to cut three per cent of its overall workforce. Current involuntary job cuts are limited to 17, which represents a reduction to 0.15 per cent of the total staff. The hospital is mitigating these cuts by offering early retirement packages and freezing or eliminating vacant positions.

The Ottawa Hospital is one of the largest health-sciences centres in Canada and employs over 13,000 people in the National Capital Region. The union representing staff noted that the 400 unfilled positions mean that care work is either not being performed or is being absorbed by the remaining employees.
