Rheinmetall opens £60mn defense facility in Telford for British Army components
What happened
A new facility in Telford has opened, designed to manufacture components for the British Army. The £60mn factory, known as the Gun Hall, will produce 245 gun barrels and 50 breeches annually. These components include barrels for the Challenger 3 tank and the RCH 155 artillery system. Wes Streeting and General Sir Roly Walker officially opened the 11,500-square-metre site.
Why it matters
The facility represents a significant effort to rebuild Britain’s defense manufacturing capabilities. By producing these critical components domestically, the initiative aims to end Britain’s reliance on overseas suppliers for these items. This capacity build-out is driven by concerns over the demands of a potential future European war.
Wes Streeting spoke at the opening of the new facility in Telford.
