Port of Savannah Secures Permit for 3.5M TEU Container Terminal
What happened
The Georgia Ports Authority secured approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a new container terminal at the Port of Savannah. This terminal, which will be built on Hutchison Island, is planned to have a capacity of 3.5 million TEU. Additionally, the Port of Savannah is spending $1.6 billion to increase the Ocean Terminal's capacity to 1.75 million TEU by 2028.
Why it matters
The expansion allows the Port of Savannah to continue its growth, which began in 2016 following the inauguration of the New Panama Canal. The port authority has reported that container volume has nearly doubled and overall revenues have more than tripled.
The Georgia Ports Authority is working to strengthen Savannah's position as a leading logistics hub.
