New Shengji Tunnel Opens, Connecting Nangang and Xizhi Districts
What happened
The Shengji Tunnel opened on September 28, 2026, connecting Zhongxiao East Road to the National Biotechnology Research Park (NBRP) in Nangang District. The new route significantly reduces travel time between Nangang and Xizhi District. This central-government funded infrastructure project, costing NT$1.878 billion (US$59.07 million), removes a traffic bottleneck on Zhongxiao East Road and Academia Road.

Why it matters
The tunnel was built in response to business and employment growth in Nangang, which was driven by the NBRP. The new route provides an alternative path and is expected to ease traffic congestion during peak hours. It also connects the biotechnology park to major transit hubs, including the Taipei Metro and Taiwan Railway's Nangang stations.
