Nigeria achieves first tele-robotic surgery in West Africa

A successful tele-robotic surgery was conducted in Abuja, Nigeria, involving a patient at Nisa Premier Hospital. The procedure, a telesurgery-assisted, robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy, was performed in real time from a Toumai robotic surgery console located at Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV) in Ogun State. The operation, which removed a kidney affected by a cancerous tumour, was a collaborative effort between RHV, RoboMed Global, and Nisa Premier Hospital. The procedure took approximately three hours and the patient was reported to be in good condition.

The successful execution of the procedure was described as the first instance of telesurgery in West Africa. The lead surgeon stated that the procedure demonstrated that telesurgery could be safely utilized to provide specialized surgical care across different locations in Nigeria and beyond. This successful case study highlights the potential for advanced medical technology adoption within the region.
