Nagaland Launches General Household Scheme to Expand Food Grain Support
What happened
The Department of Food and Civil Supplies, Government of Nagaland, launched the General Household (GHH) Scheme in Dimapur on October 14. This scheme extends food grain support to eligible households that are not covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013, aiming to protect them against food inflation and seasonal grain shortages. The first phase identified 1,21,238 beneficiaries, and the scheme is open to all eligible Indian citizens meeting the prescribed criteria.

Why it matters
The GHH Scheme addresses the shortfall in food grain allocation following the implementation of the NFSA. It complements the existing Centre’s Tide Over Rice allocation, which has been in place since 2017 and allows the state to appoint stockists to lift food grains from FCI at their own expense.
The Centre established a mechanism to provide services for the state of Nagaland.
