Lancaster University study reveals severe decline in UK entry-level jobs

A study conducted by the Work Foundation at Lancaster University found that there is currently only one entry-level vacancy position for every three young people in the UK. The research further revealed that 36% of employers have severely cut the number of jobs aimed at those aged 16-24. The number of starter jobs available for younger people is now at a level similar to 2020-21, averaging 71,000 vacancies a week.

The findings confirm a declining size of the entry-level job market across the United Kingdom. The decline in starter jobs has accelerated significantly over the last 12 months, growing from 8.1% to 12.8%. Analysis suggests that the decrease in entry-level positions could damage confidence and make the job market difficult to navigate.
