UK-Developed Emergency Response App Targets Security Needs in Nigeria
What happened
A retired military general and a software engineer unveiled iLert247, a real-time emergency response application designed to address terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping in Nigeria. The platform was developed in the United Kingdom by a software engineer, Joseph Ekeh. The system comprises three linked components: the iLert247 mobile application, the iSmart display dashboard for command centers, and the iLert SOS network for security agencies.

Why it matters
The application allows users to raise an alarm via a mobile app, automatically sending exact GPS coordinates and live satellite imagery to control centers and law enforcement units. The system claims to process distress signals and broadcast locations to nearby security personnel in two seconds or less, compared to the 13 to 15 seconds typical for conventional international emergency channels.
The UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership was established on January 22, 1995.
