Investigation into Argos Georgia Sinking Near Falkland Islands

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch investigated the sinking of the longliner Argos Georgia, which occurred on July 22, 2024, near the Falkland Islands. The vessel was sailing from Port Stanley toward fishing grounds near South Georgia when its line-hauling hatch on the starboard side unexpectedly opened in heavy seas. The investigation found the hatch’s manual securing mechanism had likely not been applied, and the crew was unable to close it once it opened.

The MAIB report identified several contributing factors to the sinking, including unrecognized weaknesses in the hatch’s drive mechanism, open weathertight doors, and vulnerable electrical systems. The final investigation also noted shortcomings in the emergency response, such as unstructured crew action and delays in declaring distress.
