New Technology Targets Efficiency of Data Center Gas Turbines in Texas
What happened
A new company, American Supercritical, announced $8 million in funding to develop liquid carbon dioxide technology. This technology is designed to retrofit inefficient gas turbines used in data centers, allowing them to generate more power without increasing emissions. The technology could theoretically be applied to various energy sources when power demand is rising.

Why it matters
Many data centers across the United States currently use simple-cycle turbines, which convert only about 35 percent of energy into electricity. Combined-cycle plants are significantly more efficient, converting between 60 and 65 percent of energy. The exhaust from these plants includes greenhouse gases.
Amazon has begun work on a data center campus in West Texas, but the Governor has paused grid connections for the project.
