Lagos Governor Calls for Global Finance and Partnerships at UNGA

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State Governor, addressed the United Nations General Assembly on September 25, 2026. Speaking as a representative of the Under2 Coalition, a global network of state and regional governments, Sanwo-Olu called for stronger global partnerships and better access to affordable, long-term finance for subnational governments. He stressed that climate action in Lagos is integrated into the state’s broader development strategy, focusing on urban resilience, transportation, waste management, and economic development.

The calls made by Sanwo-Olu highlight the growing need for international financial mechanisms to support ambitious climate action at the subnational level. The discussions took place during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which focused on accelerating the global energy transition and mobilizing climate finance.
