Noida Initiates Infrastructure Survey for Yamuna Floodplain Homes
What happened
Power distribution companies are conducting infrastructure surveys in the Yamuna floodplains and the Hindon area of Noida to extend temporary 2kW power connections to hundreds of illegally built homes. The survey aims to check for rampant power theft, as power is currently supplied via a high-voltage distribution system. To strengthen the network, plans include building a substation with 2km of 33kV line and 15km of 11kV line, with preliminary costs set at Rs 22 crore for Noida and Rs 2.3 crore for Ghaziabad.

Why it matters
The planned infrastructure investment involves building a systematic power network in the floodplain area, contingent on residents bearing the costs of the network development and their connection. PVVNL and NPCL will maintain records of all consumers, and connections could be disconnected if the administration removes the illegally built homes.
Water level rise in the Yamuna basin has occurred due to dam releases following heavy upstream rainfall, while MLA Pankaj Singh has previously urged a humanitarian approach to residents near the Yamuna.
