Ministerial Investigation Launched into Appointments of Construction Firm Moriel

An inquiry has been initiated into the appointments of Moriel Infrastructure Group concerning major government infrastructure projects in South Africa. The investigation was requested by Barbara Creecy, the Minister of Transport, to determine if Moriel was lawfully appointed and if it was meeting its contractual obligations. This scrutiny follows concerns raised by the South African Women in Construction and Built Environment (SAWIC & BE) regarding the broader public construction procurement system.

The inquiry focuses on two contracts between the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) and Moriel, which involve projects on the N1 and N2 national roads. The controversy highlights questions about how major construction contracts are awarded and whether they benefit from adequate oversight.
