Oversight Commission Details Systemic Issues in Local Authority Housing Management
What happened
The National Oversight and Audit Commission released findings concerning local authority housing management issues. The chairman detailed that nationwide local authorities spent around 300 million euro on social housing maintenance in 2025, marking an increase of over 6.5 percent from the previous year. In one case, Mayo County Council spent almost 2.4 million euro on maintenance for its 2,665 owned homes.

Why it matters
The findings revealed that, on average, almost 80 percent of rented homes inspected by the council failed to comply with housing standards on their first inspection. Furthermore, the average cost to restore a vacant property to use was over 17,400 euro.
An MP had requested an audit of housing program funding, and the Auditor General provided oversight on public expenditure related to housing.
