Australia Designates Storage Site for Japan's Carbon Capture Project
What happened
Australia designated the West Peron undersea rock formation, located off the north coast, as a storage site for the Bonaparte carbon capture and storage project proposed by Japan’s Inpex. This project initially plans to receive carbon dioxide from Inpex’s Ichthys liquefied natural gas project before expanding services to other industrial facilities. The formation is a deep layer of porous rock beneath the seabed, capable of permanently storing up to 443 million tons of carbon dioxide over 35 years.

Why it matters
The decision demonstrates government support for technologies aimed at reducing emissions from industries where cutting greenhouse gas emissions is difficult. Madeleine King, Australia Resources Minister, stated that carbon capture and storage will be important in supporting Australia’s transition to net zero emissions.
The Australian Government and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade support international environmental initiatives.
