BCG Report: Indian Consumer Durables Market Growth and Localization Challenges
What happened
A joint report by Boston Consulting Group and the Confederation of Indian Industry outlines the expected growth trajectory of India’s consumer durables sector. The sector is projected to grow at 8–10 per cent annually through 2030, reaching a market value of ₹3–3.25 lakh crore. This growth could generate an incremental opportunity of ₹40,000–50,000 crore for domestic value addition across materials and conversion.
Why it matters
Growth drivers include rising affluence, nuclearisation, easier financing, and wider distribution, alongside premiumisation and replacement demand. However, current bill-of-materials localization ranges from 25–70 per cent across major categories, meaning critical components still rely on global supply chains.
