What happened
A swarm of minor earthquakes was detected in Northern California, just miles from the San Andreas Fault. The US Geological Survey monitored more than two dozen minor seismic events over the last day. A trio of magnitude 2.5 earthquakes occurred near Berkeley, Concord, and Gilroy, located 10 to 20 miles from the fault.

Why it matters
This fresh activity comes after scientists warned there is nearly a 75-percent chance of a major earthquake erupting in the Bay Area by 2055. In September, the USGS increased the risk of a major disaster in Northern California from 72 to 74.1 percent within the next three decades.
Accumulation of unprecedented seismic stress has been reported in Southern California involving the San Andreas and San Jacinto Faults.
