What happened
A scorecard from Monash University's national Indigenous disaster resilience program found that 50 of 63 declared natural disasters over the past year disproportionately impacted First Nations communities. Bhiamie Williamson, who leads the program, stated that the findings highlight chronic underinvestment in and a lack of partnership with community organizations.
Why it matters
The scorecard examines whether emergency management agencies are prepared to work with Indigenous people and if community organizations are being funded to prepare for disaster. The report noted that state and territory governments are falling short of their commitments under closing the gap agreements.
