Italy's Ruling Party Rejects Budget Deviation Call for 2027 Law

The ruling Brothers of Italy party rejected a proposal made by Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini regarding a major deviation from the EU's public finance rules for the 2027 budget law. Salvini had called for this deviation after Istat reported that Italy's deficit-to-GDP ratio for 2025 stood at 3.1%, complicating the country's emergence from the EU excessive-deficit infringement procedure. Salvini stated his ministry alone required an additional €8 billion.

The rejection limits the government's ability to deviate from established EU fiscal rules for the 2027 budget. The party's economy point man cautioned against such deviations, stressing the need to operate within a framework compatible with public finance. The government has been praised internationally for its prudent management of Italy's public finances since taking office in 2022.
