Vigo County Council delays 2027 budget vote amid spending proposals
What happened
The Vigo County Council did not vote on the 2027 county budget. A proposal from the Budget Committee, chaired by Steve Ellis, suggested a flat $4,000 salary increase for full-time county employees and 22 new positions. Commissioners requested $6 million annually plus $15 million up front.

Why it matters
Commissioner Chris Switzer warned that the proposed budget increase, which could grow the budget 12% to 20% over 2026, could strain county finances. Switzer noted that such a substantial increase could negatively affect other county priorities, including a possible partnership with the Vigo County School Corporation on consolidation.
Funding issues are currently threatening a residential center operation, and Steve Ellis serves as County Council President.
