Bangladesh Targets $2 Billion in Jute Exports by 2031 Amid Global Demand

The government of Bangladesh is currently developing a five-year plan aimed at reviving the country's jute sector. The plan targets achieving $2 billion in export earnings from the sector by 2031. In the first two months of the current fiscal year, jute and jute product exports brought in $162.5 million, marking a 37.09 percent increase year-on-year. Global demand is rising for various products, including technical textiles, home furnishings, and charcoal made from jute sticks, which is specifically in demand in China.

The government's ambitious targets signal a major push to utilize the full potential of the jute industry. The growth in global demand suggests a favorable market environment for Bangladeshi agricultural products. Successful execution of the five-year plan could significantly bolster the country's export economy.

The export performance of Vietnam, China, and Bangladesh is being driven by intense US market competition and consumer spending pressures. Under Trump's trade agenda, multiple economies including Vietnam, China, Taiwan, and Japan are targeted, leading to potential new tariffs and heightened tensions.
