Mangaluru Fishermen Appeal for Harbour Infrastructure and Market Relocation

The Chief Minister visited the fishing harbour in Mangaluru on September 19, 2026, and insisted that the fish trade should not be stopped, stating it should not affect the livelihood of fishermen and traders. Later, associations representing the Karnataka Purse Seine Fishermen’s Association and the Mangaluru Trawl Boat Fishermen’s Association appealed to the state government regarding the slow pace of ongoing jetty construction at the harbour. They also suggested relocating the wholesale and commission fish market to a three-acre plot at the College of Fisheries to reduce traffic congestion.

Fishermen leaders stated that the slow construction of the harbour jetty, for which grants of Rs 37.5 crore and Rs 49.5 crore were sanctioned, is adversely affecting fishing activities and the daily operations of the port. The current congestion caused by the daily influx of over 200 vehicles is a major issue for the port's operations.
