Novonesis Scales Up Microalgae Production at Kalundborg Site
What happened
The Danish firm Novonesis has moved into a large enzyme manufacturing site, allowing it to shift from pilot-scale testing to industrial-scale supply, increasing production capacity almost fivefold. The new reactor at the Novonesis Kalundborg plant will house Algiecel’s modular bioreactors, which cultivate Nannochloropsis oceanica microalgae using artificial light and captured CO₂. This investment follows Algiecel raising €8 million in 2024 to support the technology's scale-up.

Why it matters
The global omega-3 market is projected to reach $5.4 billion by 2033, but fish oil supplies are currently under strain. Cumulative fish oil supply in leading producing regions was 31% below 2025 year-to-date levels in June 2026. Forecasters anticipate further fish oil price rises due to the predicted 2026-2027 El Niño.
Salmon production and exports are discussed, noting Norway as a leading market and Chile's role in global production.
