Sint Maarten Minister defends permits, calls for zoning plan update
What happened
During a Council of Ministers press briefing in Philipsburg, Minister Marinka Gumbs defended recently approved high-rise building permits in Maho and another hillside area. He stated that the parcels in question allow for that type of construction under draft zoning plans. However, he acknowledged that decision-making has been inconsistent, noting that zoning is binding for some but only a policy for others.

Why it matters
The Minister emphasized that zoning should provide certainty regarding what landowners can build and what infrastructure the government must provide, including roads and wastewater systems. He called for an updated zoning plan, noting that the current 2014 plans are 12 years old and do not adequately reflect the needs of a growing Sint Maarten.
The Council of Ministers functions as the governing body of Sint Maarten.
