Harvard Researcher Leaves for UBC Amid Funding Instability Under Trump Administration

Curtis Huttenhower, an associate professor at Harvard University, is relocating to the University of British Columbia in Summer 2027. The move follows a government initiative to recruit top academic talent to Canadian universities, which includes the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada program. Huttenhower stated that the restructuring of federal funding under the second Trump administration had a more adverse effect on Harvard than outside observers might assume.

The initiative involved pledging over $350 million to 64 researchers, many recruited from the U.S. The instability in the U.S. research and political climate under the second Trump administration was cited by some as a driving factor for researchers moving north.
