Food Shortages Affect 70 Percent of Northern Bahr el Ghazal Population

A rapid food-security assessment found that a prolonged dry spell is putting 70 percent of the population in Northern Bahr el Ghazal at risk of food shortages later this year and early next year. The assessment, conducted by the state government and humanitarian partners, examined the impact on crops, livestock, and food security across the state. State Minister of Information Gabriel Daniel confirmed the findings after a Council of Ministers meeting, noting that agricultural production of sorghum, millet, and vegetables had been significantly affected.

The crisis is centered in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, with Aweil Centre identified as the most severely affected area. The findings indicate a major strain on the state's agricultural base and food supply chains due to the adverse weather conditions.
