Maharashtra Inaugurates Prepaid Auto-Rickshaw Initiative in Thane

Maharashtra officially inaugurated its first prepaid auto-rickshaw initiative at Thane Railway Station on September 21, 2026. The service, which is a joint project, was spearheaded by the Late Vasantrao Davkhare Auto-Taxi Driver-Owner Federation and the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Thane. The initiative was launched to introduce a transparent fare system, streamline traffic queues, and reduce disputes between drivers and passengers. The project followed nearly two years of follow-up to address long-standing issues such as fare ambiguity and disorganized queues at the station.

The inauguration introduces a new operational framework for auto-rickshaw services in the Thane area. This move aims to establish a dedicated prepaid rickshaw stand and commuter help desk, formalizing a service model that did not previously exist in Maharashtra. The successful rollout of this initiative demonstrates a move toward formalizing local transport services.
