ZINARA completes US$206M loan repayment to Development Bank of Southern Africa
What happened
The Zimbabwe National Road Administration stated that it made the final payment of the US$206 million loan to the Development Bank of Southern Africa on September 30. The loan, which was signed in 2011 to upgrade the Plumtree-Bulawayo-Harare-Mutare highway, had previously been a regular subject of inquiry by the Public Accounts Committee. When the current board arrived in December 2021, over US$50 million was still outstanding.

Why it matters
The full repayment of the debt improves the balance sheet of the Development Bank of Southern Africa. The resolution of this long-standing debt issue also relates to the oversight function of the Public Accounts Committee, which has previously scrutinized the loan payments.
