Boulder Public Library District faces budget cuts due to declining tax revenue

The Boulder Public Library District is planning to reduce staffing by up to 20% next year. This restructuring is necessary to reallocate $2.5 million in the 2027 budget to cover long-deferred capital maintenance and rising costs. The decline in district tax revenues is attributed to a shrinking commercial tax base, which is expected to drop from $21.7 million in 2024 to $20.3 million in 2027, according to the Boulder County Assessor.

The revenue decline forces the library district to address decades of deferred maintenance and inflation while maintaining operations. The Library District Board of Trustees is scheduled to review these changes at its September 29 meeting.
