FIRE files lawsuit against Tennessee over government employee termination

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression filed a lawsuit in Tennessee on behalf of Monica Meeks, a former financial services investigator for the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. The suit alleges that TDCI Commissioner Carter Lawrence unlawfully terminated Meeks after she made a comment on a Facebook post. The complaint further claims Lawrence violated Meeks’ First Amendment right to free speech due to his personal disagreement with her views.

The legal action challenges the termination of a state employee based on online speech, raising questions about the limits of free speech for government workers in Tennessee. A U.S. District Judge formally denied the state’s motion to dismiss the case.
