Rep. Frank Mrvan challenges DOE order keeping power plants running in Northwest Indiana

U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan introduced the Utility and Transparency Act to prevent federal and consumer payments for reopening or preventing the closure of outdated power facilities. Mrvan challenged a renewed emergency order from Secretary Chris Wright by the United States Department of Energy that keeps NIPSCO’s R.M. Schahfer Generating Station operational. Mrvan argues that government intervention forcing companies to run non-viable facilities passes costs onto consumers.

The action targets federal mandates that increase utility costs for consumers in Northwest Indiana. Mrvan contends that when the government forces energy companies to operate facilities that are no longer economically viable, those costs are ultimately passed on to ratepayers.
