India relaxes speed limits on expressways; AI monitoring proposed
What happened
Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, announced a 20 percent relaxation on the existing speed limit of 120 kmph on expressways. This means motorists traveling up to 144 kmph may not be issued a fine, provided they do not exceed the 20 percent allowance. The announcement was made during the Confederation of Indian Industry National Conference on Highways. Gadkari also proposed introducing an AI-based traffic management system that would use cameras to monitor adherence to traffic rules, such as wearing seatbelts or helmets, and issue challans for violations.
