GEF Funds Land Restoration Project in Kyrgyzstan's Syr Darya Basin
What happened
The Global Environment Facility is providing financing for a four-year land restoration project in the Syr Darya basin. The initiative, which will restore at least 264 hectares in the Jalal-Abad region, will be implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and Kyrgyzstan’s Forestry Service. The work includes agroforestry and sustainable land and water management practices, aiming to sequester about 2.22 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.

Why it matters
The project addresses concerns over the future of the Syr Darya, a main water system in Central Asia. This system is crucial for feeding large farming areas and supporting hydropower plants. The restoration work aims to improve land and water management practices in the basin, which is stressed by shrinking glaciers and declining forest cover.
The Central Asian Investment Program seeks international financial backing for land restoration projects.
