Washington State Expands Free Preschool Program for Low-Income Children

The governor's office announced that the state of Washington is expanding its Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) to serve about 2,400 more low-income children this school year. This expansion restores slots lost due to budget cuts made last year, which had reduced the program by about 2,000 slots statewide. The program, which serves low-income 3- and 4-year-olds, is funded with over $251 million in state money and grant funding from the Ballmer Group Philanthropy.

The ECEAP combines early education with family support and health screenings, targeting the poorest families in Washington. The program's expansion is supported by significant state funding and major philanthropic grants, indicating a large-scale investment in early education infrastructure.
