California Grape Market Decline Forces Growers to Cut Production

Demand for products in California is plunging due to shifts in consumer drinking habits. In response, many growers in California are struggling to sell their grapes as wine sales have decreased by more than 20% over a five-year period. This decline has caused prices paid for grapes to drop, prompting growers to remove roughly a quarter of the state's vineyards from production. Third-generation grower Bill Berryhill noted he cannot find buyers for grapes grown on 200 of his 500 acres and plans to remove 50 acres from production.

The market downturn is forcing growers to harvest at a loss or pivot to other crops like almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and olives. For Berryhill, the current situation has resulted in financial losses for three consecutive years.

Demand for wine has dropped significantly in California wine country. The industry in Napa and Northern California is facing market downturns and new state-mandated water fees.
