Heavy Rains Cause Soybean Discoloration in Plains States
What happened
Heavy rainfall in parts of Nebraska and other Plains states led to fungal growth in soybeans. These discolored beans are designated as Soybeans of Other Color, or SBOC. The discoloration resulted from high humidity in August followed by heavy rains in September.

Why it matters
The discoloration can significantly reduce a farmer's bottom line. While the color change does not appear to impact the quality of soybean meal or oil, the resulting SBOC may affect the export viability of the crops.
The Great Plains region, including Nebraska, is currently facing widespread drought cycles, low river flows, and the impact of recent rains on grass recovery.
