Norwegian Granite Used in Multi-Million-Pound River Tees Breakwater Reinforcement Project

PD Ports has initiated a multi-million-pound project to reinforce the South Gare breakwater at the River Tees. This work involves installing approximately 15,000 tonnes of high-density granite sourced from Norway around the breakwater's base. The project is intended to strengthen the structure against severe storm conditions and ensure safe passage for vessels using the river.

The breakwater is a critical piece of infrastructure that has been in place for over 150 years. The reinforcement is necessary due to damage sustained during extreme weather events, such as Storm Babet in 2023. The project supports vital operations for businesses relying on the river.
