Hindustan Paper Corporation Mills Enter Liquidation Amid Dues Dispute
What happened
The Hindustan Paper Corporation mills, which were Centre-run, have entered liquidation. The Cachar Paper Mill stopped production in October 2015, and the Nagaon Paper Mill shut down in March 2017. Why it matters
The liquidation of the mills and the ongoing dispute over unpaid wages highlight financial mismanagement issues in the region. Although the Assam govt acquired the mills’ assets through liquidation and offered a humanitarian assistance package, workers’ organizations continue to demand a settlement of outstanding dues and rehabilitation.
A CAG report tabled in the Assembly previously exposed financial mismanagement in Assam.
