Report Finds New York Has Highest Tax Burden and Spending Among States

A report released by the Citizens Budget Commission found that New York ranks No. 1 in tax burden per resident when combining all state and local taxes. The watchdog group also determined that New York is the biggest spender among mainland states, second only to Alaska, with spending covering areas like Medicaid and public education per student. The report was issued during the gubernatorial campaign between Kathy Hochul and Bruce Blakeman.

The Citizens Budget Commission stated that the state’s high fiscal burdens, combined with a high cost of living and uneven public services, weaken New York’s ability to attract and retain residents and businesses. The report suggests that New York State and its localities should reduce taxes while improving service quality and government efficiency.

Bruce Blakeman and Kathy Hochul are contesting for the governorship of New York State, a race influenced by the federal political landscape involving Donald Trump.
