Cameron Parish invests $50 million in new ferry service for Calcasieu Ship Channel
What happened
A new ferryboat is now operating for the Cameron Crossing in Cameron Parish, replacing the Cameron II, which has been in service since 1964. The Department of Transportation Secretary Glenn Ledet stated that two new ferries are being implemented to ensure uninterrupted loading and unloading of commercial vehicles across the Calcasieu Ship Channel. The second ferry is expected to be completed in late November.
Why it matters
The investment of nearly $50 million in new ferries is intended to support the heavy investment in LNG and energy facilities in the region. The service, which currently supports about 800 vehicles daily, will ensure safe evacuations from hurricanes and lower greenhouse gas emissions by using battery-powered electric thrusters.
