Fewer IIM and IIT Alumni Launch Tech Startups in 2026, Despite Ecosystem Growth
What happened
Despite a broader expansion in India's startup ecosystem, fewer graduates from the Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management chose entrepreneurship in the first eight months of 2026 compared to the entirety of 2025. Between January and August 2026, 79 IIT alumni and 20 IIM alumni founded new technology startups. This compares to 307 IIT graduates and 71 IIM graduates who launched startups during 2025. Overall, technology startups founded between January and August 2026 totaled 6,353, up from 3,969 in the previous year.

Why it matters
The increase in the number of startups founded indicates continued entrepreneurial activity across India. However, the relatively low participation of graduates from premier institutions raises questions about whether India's highly skilled talent pool is translating into a larger number of new ventures.
