India launches e-methanol plant at Kandla Port for global shipping
What happened
On September 26, 2026, Sarbananda Sonowal, along with Bhupendra Patel and Himanta Biswa Sarma, laid the foundation stone for India’s first port-based e-methanol plant at Deendayal Port, Kandla. The facility will produce 150 tonnes of e-methanol daily for ships traveling the Asia–Europe trade route. The e-methanol is constructed using green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide.

Why it matters
The plant allows India to shift its role from relying on imported fuel to producing clean marine fuel for the world. Deendayal Port, which handled 160.11 million tonnes of cargo in 2025-26, is transforming into a clean-fuel refueling station.
Sarbananda Sonowal represents Gujarat's interests in a new infrastructure project linking Kandla to the Singapore-Rotterdam route.
