Indian Navy Selects Indigenous Sonar System for Nilgiri-Class Frigates

The Indian Navy has selected the HUMSA-NG Mk II hull-mounted sonar, also known as HUMSA-2020, for installation on sixteen warships. This system, which is both active and passive, was developed by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited in Bangalore. The order includes seven Project 17A Nilgiri-class stealth frigates, three Talwar-class frigates from the Tushil batch, four further Talwar-class frigates, and one unit each for the existing INS Rana and INS Brahmaputra.

The purchase represents one of the largest orders for indigenous sonar systems by the Navy. The successful deployment of this technology demonstrates the Navy's growing trust in domestically produced underwater surveillance capabilities as core to its anti-submarine warfare strategy.
