Study finds gaps in China's food and nutrition policies amid rising consumer expectations

Innova published a study in *Frontiers in Nutrition* assessing food and nutrition policies in China. The assessment used a China-adapted version of the Healthy Food Environment Policy Index (Food-EPI) to evaluate 15 policies. The study found that all three evaluated areas—governance, funding and resources, and platforms for interaction—received a medium rating. The weakest scores were recorded for indicators such as restricting commercial influence over food-policy development at 55.4% and funding for healthy eating environments at 58.4%.

The findings indicate that while consumer interest in products like those offering lower sugar, higher protein, and higher fiber is rising, the supporting policy structures remain inconsistent. This suggests a market where expectations for healthier food are increasing, but the foundational systems are still being strengthened.

The National Nutrition Technical Working Group is leading a review of national nutrition challenges, which involves the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. The leadership of the National Nutrition Agency has also been mandated to change, with input sought from the National Economic Council.
