Classic Ship Funchal Faces Insolvency and Auction

The 65-year-old classic passenger ship Funchal is facing an uncertain future as its owners enter insolvency proceedings. The Madeira Judicial Court ordered the ship to be sold in a sealed-bid auction as part of the liquidation of Teamson, the company that owned her. The auction process began on September 18, with interested parties having until September 30 to submit bids. The minimum bid required to enter the market is 802,354 euros ($921,000).

The sale allows a buyer to acquire the ship free of debts and encumbrances, though they assume all immediate expenses. The process effectively places the vessel into the scrap market, dependent on the successful bids received by the administrator.
