Iran Parliament Approves New Penalties for Vessels in Strait of Hormuz

The Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission approved Articles 13, 14, and 15 of the "Strategic Action to Ensure Security and Development of the Strait of Hormuz" bill. This legislation proposes new penalties for vessels that violate Iranian transit regulations in the Strait of Hormuz. Under Article 13, authorities could confiscate 20 percent of a violating vessel's cargo or recover its equivalent financial value, and temporarily impound the ship.

The approved bill establishes specialized judicial mechanisms for enforcing the proposed regulations. The penalties include the possible confiscation of cargo and the temporary detention of vessels. This increases Iran's regulatory control over maritime traffic in the strategically important waterway.
