Federal Government Cancels Unauthorized ACA Enrollments, Massachusetts Unaffected

The federal government announced the cancellation of approximately 315,000 unauthorized enrollments across Affordable Care Act insurance marketplaces, covering over 760,000 people. This action is expected to return about $2.2 billion to the government. Vice President JD Vance stated that these cancellations target individuals believed to be fraudulently enrolled in the program. Massachusetts is insulated from this action because its state-based marketplace is affected only by federally facilitated marketplaces.

The federal move is part of the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud efforts aimed at protecting taxpayer dollars in the health care system. The cancellation of unauthorized enrollments represents a significant financial recovery for the government. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services noted that Massachusetts operates one of 21 state-based marketplaces in Plan Year 2026.

A task force led by JD Vance has been overseeing fraud elimination efforts, alongside the publication of new rulemaking documents by CMS.
