South African Minister Details Anti-Corruption Efforts and SIU Findings Since 2014
What happened
Jeff Radebe, Minister in the Presidency responsible for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, spoke about anti-corruption efforts in South Africa on December 9, 2016. Radebe stated that since 2014, the government had secured convictions for corruption involving 90 persons and legal entities. Of these, 32 cases involved amounts of R5 million or more, with the total amount involved reaching approximately R3.8 billion.

Why it matters
The government also reported that since 2014, 871 freezing orders were obtained, valued at R7.65 billion, alongside 1,089 forfeiture orders valued at R2.86 billion. Radebe noted that President Zuma had signed 27 Proclamations empowering the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) to investigate serious malpractices in State Institutions.
