Entrepreneur Tests Localized Energy Production to Address European Grid Vulnerabilities

Jonas Birgersson is testing a new system in his hometown of Lund, Sweden, focused on local production, storage, and sharing of electricity. This initiative follows the 2022 Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid, which highlighted the vulnerabilities of large electric systems. Birgersson's company, ViaEuropa, has partnered with an association representing housing companies across Sweden, managing a total of 1 million apartments.

The experiment aims to develop a solution that is both cheaper and more secure for electricity supply. This focus on localized production is driven by the fact that many electric grids are products of 19th- and 20th-century engineering and struggle to meet modern demands, such as those from data centers. Global experts have taken notice of the project.
