Kenya Bureau of Standards pushes for stricter energy product quality
What happened
The Kenya Bureau of Standards called for stronger enforcement of quality standards within Kenya's energy sector. KEBS Director General Esther Ngari stated that standards are necessary to ensure that solar panels, batteries, and electrical appliances meet safety, quality, and efficiency requirements. KEBS announced it will work with regulators, manufacturers, importers, and research institutions to ensure standards keep pace with emerging technologies.

Why it matters
Substandard products could undermine Kenya’s transition toward affordable and clean energy. Ngari noted that inefficient equipment could increase operating costs for both households and businesses. These standards help consumers make informed choices and prevent investments in energy technology from becoming sources of loss.
EPRA is mandated to regulate the energy sector in Kenya, while global oil prices are influenced by US diplomacy and Iran tensions.
